Learning with League Excursion
On Wednesday 11th March, our indigenous students were invited to spend the day at Allianz Stadium working with NRL players past and present. Channel 7 news were there to film their meeting with one of the more famous NRL players, Anthony Minichello.
At this year's Circus Beserkus we raised over $2700 for UNICEF. This money will be spent helping children affected by the ebola crisis in West Africa.
Book Parade - Children Love Reading
At the much loved Book Parade, excited students displayed a multitude of book characters from all our favourite story books, the new, the old and the classics. In spite of rain showers, students arrived in full costume and proudly paraded down Darling Street for the annual Book Parade. It was a wonderful display of creativity and an exhibition of children's love of reading.
Education Week - A Great Celebration of Public Education
There was a special buzz around the school during Education Week with lots of evidence of the richness of school life and the learning that takes place inside and outside the classroom.
At school, students had a multicultural focus to their learning, taking a great interest in the rich culture of countries around the world, many of which are represented here in our own school community and our wider local community. It was wonderful to share this learning with parents, grandparents and other family members at Assembly and in classrooms.
We shared our skills and enthusiasm with those beyond the school as well. In our weaving project at the front of the school students, staff and families worked together to create something beautiful out of many very different fabrics, which is a great reflection of the way in which students, staff and family members combine their individual personalities, talents and stories to create our great school community. The ukulele group, string ensembles and our bands performed wonderfully for parents and passers-by on the deck of Rozelle Square each morning and a group of twenty Year 2 students entertained older members of our local community at the Hannaford Centre. 12 of our students and three of our teachers represented Rozelle magnificently at the three day Create East workshops and performance at NIDA.
On Wednesday 6th August students from Years 2 - 6 went down to King George's Oval to take part in our Athletics Carnvial. Children had the oppportunity to participate in a variety of athletics events including running races, discus, shotput and long jump. The weather was beautiful and a great day was had by all.
This year Rozelle was lucky enough to have the Koomurri group visit us again. They performed a smoking ceremony for us as well as a welcome song and dance (with some fo the teachers!). In groups, students took turns learning about different aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. We listened to the didgeridoo, danced, learnt about boomerangs and other hunting tools, had our faces painted and painted a huge canvas which included every student's hand in the whole school!
Here's a little taste of some fo the activities we took part in.
Stage 1 Excursion to the Australian Museum
Students in Years 1 and 2 had a great time exploring the world of dinosaurs and crystals at the Australian Museum recently.
2014 Cross Country Carnival
All students in Years 2-6 particpated in our recent Cross Country Carnival took place at King George's Oval. Although the Kindy and Year 1 students were too young to partipate in the formal carnival, it didn't stop them holding their own running races in the school grounds.
2014 Easter Hat Parade
Our Easter Hat Parade took place in April. As always parents, grandparents and members of the community lined Darling Street to watch this year's fantastic array of hats and bonnets parade by.
2014 Swimming Carnival
The swimming carnival took place on Wednesday 5th February and was a great success thanks to the combined efforts of students, staff and parents. Students were enthusiastic in their participation and cheering and followed instructions extremely well. Staff and parent volunteers worked tirelessly to make sure the events ran smoothly and students were kept safe. The family members who came along to cheer added to the great atmosphere.
